Champollion was involved with the formation of the Russia Foundation from the very
start, helping to recruit teams of highly-respected international experts to its
Advisory Board and then its Energy Forum. We have worked with them to boost both
the quantity and quality of debate across Europe about the future of Russia. Our
focus has been mostly on two issues. First, warning of the dangers of the slide to
authoritarianism in Russia under Vladimir Putin – with growing restrictions on political
freedom, media expression and civil rights – while debating the likely direction
of the country since he handed the Presidency to Dmitry Medvedev. And, second, raising
the implications for Europe of increasing dependence on Russian energy sources, especially
given the evident political and investment threats to the security of supply.
