After the University and College Union voted at its annual conference in 2007 to
consider a boycott of Israeli academic institutions, Champollion was commissioned
by the Fair Play Campaign Group and the Britain Israel Communications and Research
Centre to act as strategic advisor to their jointly-led campaign to prevent such
a boycott from coming about. We immediately helped to assemble a broad coalition
of respected individuals and organisations from academia and among the Jewish community,
including bodies like the Russell Group and the Board of Deputies, to make the case
for academic freedom and for working with Israelis to achieve peace and nationhood
for the Palestinians. We advised on communications in the media, the internet and
advertising, to reach both national opinion-formers and grassroots UCU members, adding
to the pressure that after six months forced the UCU to abandon any notion of organising
a boycott.
“Champollion have delivered a blend of wisdom, strategic vision and creativity. Their
analytical skills, political antennae and strategic insight added a whole new dimension
to our work.”
