Britain’s prison system is in crisis: the jails are bursting at the seams, rehabilitation programmes are dying on the vine, and recidivism rates are out of control. Any other public service taking more and more of our money but delivering less and less for it, would be subject to widespread demands for reform. But prisons are invisible to most of us. That is why Champollion has been working for a coalition of leading experts in the field – including former prison governors, charity directors, renowned academics and committed individuals – and advising them on how to establish Make Justice Work.

This new group provides evidence to make a public case that tough alternatives to custody, for non-violent offenders serving less than twelve month sentences, can be more effective at reducing criminality and increasing public safety. They also offer better value for money, while allowing prisons and the important work they can do to be reserved for the most prolific and dangerous criminals, from which the public needs protection. Champollion serves as the campaign staff, answering to the director and advisory board, to contest knee-jerk calls from parts of the media and certain politicians for punishments that simply do not work.

"Champollion have played an exceptional role for Make Justice Work. Not only did they manage the launch of the campaign, which gained excellent media coverage, but they have consistently ensured our continued media presence and arranged high level introductions to key stakeholders. The Champollion team has provided us with a highly professional service and we are delighted with the progress that is being made."
