When Mazheikiu Nafta, an oil refinery on the Baltic Sea jointly owned by the Lithuanian
Government and Yukos Oil, was put up for sale at the end of 2005, there was a ferocious
geo-political and industrial battle to acquire it. This involved many billions of
dollars and more than half a dozen oil majors, thanks to its strategic as well as
financial significance. Kazakhstan is the second largest oil producer after Russia
among the former Soviet Republics, and Kazmunaigaz its leading oil company.
Champollion was employed by Kazmunaigaz to promote its bid for Mazheikiu Nafta in
relevant global trade and opinion-forming media outlets, and to recruit important
political and industry leaders from throughout Europe to champion its cause.
