Getting out of a taxi in Manchester’s Moss Side area at the turn of the millennium,
Erinma Bell watched helplessly as a gang of youths hanging around on the street,
apparently for no reason at all, pulled out guns and fired eleven times at one of
her travelling companions and best friends. Thankfully, the friend survived. And
it left Erinma compelled to do something about the diseases of gang culture and gun
crime spreading throughout her neighbourhood. She gave up her job and established
Carisma, the Community Alliance for Renewal, Inner South Manchester Area.
Champollion has helped, pro bono, to promote the charity’s demands: for the introduction of EU regulation to stem the supply and sale of replica guns that can be brought into Britain and converted to fire live ammunition. In addition, we sought attention for Carisma’s local work to help young people stay out of trouble and win better chances in life, including a mentoring scheme and a parenting support programme.
